Wall Street fades on Iran ceasefire jitters; Brent +3.8% into 22 April ASX open
Overnight Wall Street closed lower ahead of the US-Iran ceasefire expiry on 22 April. The S&P 500 fell 0.63% to 7,064.01 and the VIX climbed to 19.50. Brent crude jumped 3.79% to US$93.86 on continued Strait of Hormuz closure, shaping today's ASX open. Energy names WDS.AU and STO.AU sit at multi-year highs. Gold fell 1.87% to US$4,738.50, and AUD/USD slipped to 0.7149.
ASX 200 -1.18% as Cochlear crashes 40.7% to 10-year low on FY26 guidance cut
The S&P/ASX 200 fell 105.8 points or 1.18% to 8,843.6 on 22 April 2026, dragged by a historic Cochlear collapse. COH.AU shares fell 40.7% to $99.58 — a 10-year low — after the company cut FY26 earnings guidance amid softer implant sales and ongoing market challenges. HUB.AU dropped 8.33% on a Q3 flows miss. DRO.AU rose 5.54% on record Q1 FY26 cash receipts. Brent reversed 0.85% to US$92.45.
