US Pre-Market: Brent Jumps 6.96% to US$89.94, Korea's KOSPI Falls 5.98% Before the Fed
Brent crude jumped 6.96% to US$89.94 a barrel overnight on tight physical supply and Strait of Hormuz disruption, lifting US oil producers and pressuring airlines before the open. South Korea's KOSPI fell 5.98% to 5,663.24 and triggered a second straight circuit breaker after SK Hynix missed profit forecasts. S&P 500 futures held at 7,462.50, down 0.04%, into the Federal Reserve decision at 2:00pm ET.
S&P 500 Closes at the Session Low as Three Fed Dissents Point to a September Hike
The Fed held rates at 3.5% to 3.75% but three officials voted to hike, and fed funds futures ended the day pricing a 63% chance of a September increase. The S&P 500 closed at 7,316.15, down 1.52% and at its session low, after being up 0.28% during the press conference. Caterpillar and Goldman Sachs supplied 56% of the Dow's 1,153-point drop. Meta fell almost 10% after the bell on a $1.04 EPS miss, while Microsoft rose about 3% on Azure growth of 43%.
