S&P 500 adds 1.05% as Microsoft and Amazon reverse a Fed-day loss

The S&P 500 closed the week to 31 July 2026 at 7,489.72, up 1.05%, with the whole gain arriving on Thursday and Friday after cloud results from Microsoft, Amazon and Alphabet reversed a 1.52% Fed-day loss. The FOMC held at 3.50% to 3.75% on a 9-3 vote with three dissents for a hike. Breadth stayed narrow: seven of eleven sectors fell, the Russell 2000 added 0.05%, and July finished with the S&P 500 down 0.13% and the Nasdaq down 3.20%.
