US Pre-Market, 24 August 2026: Samsung's Payout Terms Send Memory Stocks Lower
Samsung Electronics set out a 90 to 110 trillion won shareholder return plan without confirming a buyback, sending Samsung down 8.70% and the KOSPI down 3.12%. US memory and storage names followed: SNDK.US -5.58%, STX.US -4.00%, WDC.US -3.86%, MU.US -3.43%. The chip group erased $166.5 billion of market value before the open while staples, healthcare and gold miners added roughly $37 billion back, holding S&P 500 futures to -0.14%.
S&P 500 slips 0.28% as memory names fall and defensives rally
The S&P 500 closed at 7,652.86 on 24 August 2026, down 0.28%, as technology fell 1.78% and eight of eleven sectors finished higher. Seagate lost 6.51% and SanDisk 6.45% after reports the administration may let Apple source memory from China's CXMT and YMTC. The Dow gained 0.26%, and the 10-year Treasury yield eased to 4.70% after CNBC reported Treasury could tap its roughly $1 trillion General Account to fund bond buybacks.
