Trade Review & Performance Analysis
22 min readUpdated Mar 2026
Traders who improve are the ones who review. Systematic weekly and monthly reviews, regardless of results, separate progress from repetition. Without review, you can trade for ten years and repeat the same mistakes. With review, you identify and eliminate your weakest patterns within months.
Your weekly review takes 30-60 minutes, typically on Sunday. It covers the past week and sets up the next.
The 20-Minute Review
With automated tracking that calculates metrics for you, weekly reviews take 20 minutes. You save time by skipping manual calculation of , R-multiples, and process scores from a spreadsheet.
The monthly review takes 1-2 hours on the first weekend of each month. It goes deeper into the data.
After calculating metrics, dig deeper:
After 3-6 months of data, you start to see patterns that are invisible in real-time.
Swingfolio's analytics dashboard tracks win rate, profit factor, R-multiples, drawdown, holding period, and dozens more metrics. Weekly reviews take minutes, not hours.

Summary Metrics: Total trades, , profit factor, (R per trade), max drawdown, average process score (/6)
Strategy Performance: Trades, win rate, avg R, and profit factor per strategy
Top 3 Trades (highest ): What worked and why
Bottom 3 Trades (lowest R): What went wrong and why
Patterns Identified: Positive and negative
Process Failures: Count of trades below 5, root causes, corrective actions
Next Month's Focus: Process goal, strategy adjustment (if 30+ trade sample supports it), risk adjustment
Try This
If you have been trading (paper or live) for at least one month, complete the Monthly Review Template with your actual data. If you have not been tracking metrics, start now. A simple spreadsheet with entry date, exit date, ticker, prices, stop, and process score is enough to calculate everything in this lesson.
An equity curve, a line chart of your account balance over time, is one of the most informative visuals of your trading performance.
Plot your equity curve monthly. A strategy with 55% win rate and 2:1 R:R should produce a steadily rising curve with mild drawdowns. If the curve looks like a seismograph, something about your execution is off even if individual metrics look acceptable.
