ASX Set to Open Lower Friday as Oil Slide on Iran De-escalation Offsets Wall Street Record Run
Overnight Wall Street: S&P 500 and Nasdaq closed at fresh record highs (+0.26% and +0.36%) as the Nasdaq extended its winning streak to 12 sessions, the longest since July 2009. Crude dropped almost 4% on Iran de-escalation signalling, pushing AUD/USD to a four-year high at 0.7185. SPI futures point -0.15% at the ASX 200 open, with energy facing the tape and tech running into multi-week highs.
ASX 200 Flat at 8,947 as Lithium and BNPL Offset Coal and Retail Weakness
The ASX 200 closed Friday 17 April 2026 at 8,946.9, down 0.09%, snapping a three-week winning streak. ZIP surged 13.7% on a guidance upgrade; lithium names (ELV, CXO, PMT) rallied double digits; Stanmore Resources and Temple & Webster led the drag. The AU VIX collapsed 4.5% as Middle East tail risk faded.
