ASX 200 called 0.5% lower as oil's Hormuz slide overshadows a Dow record — Thursday 28 May 2026
The Dow closed at a record 50,644 (+0.36%) as crude sank ~5% to near US$88.68 on Iran's signal to restore Strait of Hormuz shipping within a month; the S&P 500 and Nasdaq finished flat as chips pulled back. Gold eased 1% to US$4,456 and the AUD slipped to 0.7139. SPI futures point the ASX 200 about 0.5% lower into Thursday's open, the morning after a 0.7% CPI-driven rally to 8,717.7.
ASX 200 -1.43% as gold complex craters; SiteMinder's Mews deal lifts SDR +8.6%
The S&P/ASX 200 closed at 8,592.9 on 28 May 2026, down 124.8 points or 1.43% — its steepest single-session drawdown in eight weeks. Gold miners led the unwind as spot bullion slipped 1.35% to US$4,421/oz, dragging GMD.AU -10.16%, PRU.AU -9.67%, EVN.AU -7.76% and NST.AU -7.47%. All four big banks closed lower, with CBA -2.06% the deepest. Eagers Automotive APE.AU fell 9.71% on a flat-growth H1 trading update, while SiteMinder SDR.AU bucked the tape with +8.61% on a SiteMinder Powered partnership that integrates its distribution engine natively into hospitality OS Mews.
