ASX 200 set for a flat open as a US chip selloff meets a 2.6% oil jump: Wednesday 8 July 2026
The ASX 200 is set to open flat on Wednesday 8 July 2026. Overnight, a US semiconductor selloff pushed the Nasdaq down 1.16% (MRVL.US -7.45%, AMD.US -6.51%), but Brent crude jumped 2.60% to US$76.09 on Strait of Hormuz tanker attacks, cushioning the resource-heavy local index. Gold fell 1.05% to US$4,114, pressuring NST.AU and NEM.AU, while AUD/USD slipped to 0.6928.
ASX 200 claws back a 1.4% intraday dip to close 0.2% lower, 8 July 2026
The ASX 200 closed 0.21% lower at 8,785.1 on 8 July 2026, recovering from a 1.40% intraday slide. Renewed US-Iran tension over the Strait of Hormuz lifted Brent 2.62% and hit risk appetite at the open, but gains in the big-four banks, energy and beaten-down property offset a 7.28% WiseTech drop and softer miners.
