ASX 200 set to open 85 points lower as crude sinks 5% and Wall Street's gain narrows to two stocks
SPI futures point to an ASX 200 open 85 points or 0.95% lower near 8,892, against Friday's 8,976.8 close. WTI crude trades at US$80.47 in Monday's electronic session, down 4.96% from Friday's settle, after Trump held off strikes on Iran and OPEC+ approved 188,000 barrels a day more supply from September. Wall Street closed higher on Friday, but Amazon and Alphabet supplied most of the S&P 500's 0.70% gain while the Russell 2000 fell 0.50%.
ASX 200 closes at the session high as a 2pm buy order outweighs a 5.68% crude drop
The S&P/ASX 200 closed 42.5 points higher at 9,019.3, up 0.47%, after a large programmed buy order struck big-cap index names between 2:00pm and 2:30pm AEST and left the benchmark at the top of its session range. SPI futures had pointed to an 85 point lower open near 8,892. Financials added about 14 bps and Industrials plus Consumer Discretionary about 18 bps, while Energy took off about 4 bps as WTI fell 5.68% to US$79.86. Breadth ran 180 advancers to 89 decliners across the S&P/ASX 300.
