ASX 200 Set to Ease From Record Close as Gold Runs to US$4,307
Gold rose 3.75% overnight to US$4,307.80 an ounce on progress toward reopening the Strait of Hormuz, adding 1.7% after the ASX closed. The Dow set a record while the Nasdaq fell 0.83%, with SPCX.US down 13.61% and AMD.US down 7.04% after both beat expectations. SPI futures point the ASX 200 8 points lower following Wednesday's record 9,227.8 close, with the bullion gain offset by an energy sector that fell 2.22%.
ASX 200 Closes at a Third Straight Record as Gold Miners Lead, 6 August 2026
The S&P/ASX 200 closed at 9,271.6 on 6 August 2026, up 43.8 points or 0.47%, a third consecutive record close. Gold miners led. The All Ordinaries Gold index rose 3.69% after COMEX bullion gained 3.7% overnight to US$4,314/oz, worth roughly 16 bps of the 47 bps index move. AMP.AU rose 5.96% on a first-half profit up 33% and a $150 million buyback, and REA.AU rose 3.43% on FY26 core profit up 15%. A-REITs fell 0.94% and utilities 0.39%. South Korea's KOSPI fell 4.58% on a memory chip selloff that the ASX 200 has no listed equivalent to transmit.
