ASX 200 eyes flat open after record 9,271.6 close as crude jumps 3.8%
The S&P/ASX 200 set a record close of 9,271.6 on Thursday 6 August 2026, up 0.47% in a fourth straight gain. Overnight both supports behind that run reversed: WTI crude jumped 3.82% to US$78.10 after Iran published a restrictive draft plan for the Strait of Hormuz, and the US 10-year yield rose 5 basis points to 4.67%. The Dow fell 464 points, though price weighting in GS.US and CAT.US explains most of that against a 0.18% S&P 500 loss. SPI futures point to a flat ASX open.
ASX 200 closes flat at 9,263.6 as gold and lithium miners offset a 0.95% fall in financials
The S&P/ASX 200 finished at 9,263.6 on 7 August 2026, down 8.0 points or 0.09%. A 1.32% gain in materials cancelled a 0.95% fall in financials, leaving health care to set the direction after ResMed RMD.AU dropped 8.29% on its FY26 device revenue miss. Gold miners rose for a fourth straight session and the lithium names ran hard, capping a week in which the index added 287 points or 3.2%.
