ASX 200 set to open 0.35% higher as a US jobs miss flips September Fed hike odds
SPI futures point the S&P/ASX 200 to open about 33 points or 0.35% higher on Monday 10 August 2026 from Friday's 9,263.6 close. US July payrolls fell 23,000 against a consensus of plus 83,000, moving CME FedWatch to a 44.1% chance of a September hike from 55% the prior day. The Nasdaq rose 1.30% and the S&P 500 set a record close of 7,757.6, but the US 10-year yield gave back its entire rally to end down 1 basis point, leaving the banks that make up 28% of the index without support before Tuesday's RBA decision.
ASX 200 falls 31 points as Westpac's mortgage slump drags the banks
The S&P/ASX 200 closed at 9,232.6 on 10 August 2026, down 31 points or 0.33%. Financials fell 2.27% after Westpac's third quarter update showed owner-occupier mortgage applications down 18% and investor applications down 26% since the federal budget. Seven of the 11 sectors still closed higher, led by communication services on CAR Group's FY26 result. Arena REIT fell 21.95% after a childcare tenant missed August rent. The RBA decides on the 4.35% cash rate on Tuesday.
