ASX 200 set to open 25 points lower as a failed US Treasury buyback lifts long yields
The S&P/ASX 200 is set to open about 25 points or 0.3% lower on Friday 21 August 2026 from Thursday's 9,083.8 close, after a US Treasury debt buyback failed to hold long yields down and the Dow fell 703.84 points. Walmart lost 9.15% on a comparable-sales miss and lower guidance. Gold settled 1.90% higher at US$4,574.80 and Brent 1.67% higher at US$93.15, and the US-listed mining lines closed up, so the implied local gap is about a third of the S&P 500's decline.
ASX 200 slips 0.27% to 9,058.9 as Thursday's results winners hand back their gains
The S&P/ASX 200 fell 24.9 points to 9,058.9 on 21 August 2026, down 0.27%. Thursday's biggest results winners reversed: Zip Co gave back 15.74% after adding 18.2%, and Super Retail fell 7.61% after a 15.0% rally. A-REITs were the weakest sector at -2.40% as Goodman Group extended its post-result slide to a third session. Gold and lithium miners, plus a 0.99% gain in Commonwealth Bank, held the index loss to 27 basis points.
