S&P 500 posts a third straight weekly gain as energy leads and the consumer cracks

The S&P 500 closed the week ending 14 August 2026 at 7,785.76, up 0.36% and its third straight weekly gain, with energy up 7.67% as WTI crude rose 5.40% to $82.40. The Russell 2000 set a record 3,068.42 while the Dow fell 0.56%. July CPI cooled to 3.4% and July retail sales fell 0.6%, the widest sector dispersion of the week at 9.05 points between energy and consumer discretionary.
