The S&P 500 finished the week ending 14 August 2026 at 7,785.76, up 0.36% and marking a third consecutive weekly advance, on a 7.67% run in energy as WTI crude rose 5.40% to $82.40 a barrel. ABCL.US gained 64.21%, the biggest single-name move of the week, after Phase 2 data on 10 August showed its ABCL635 candidate cut hot flash frequency and severity. July CPI cooled to 3.4% annual on Wednesday, then Friday's retail sales miss pulled the index off Thursday's record close.
The week on Wall Street
The S&P 500 closed at 7,785.76 on Friday 14 August 2026, up 0.36% over the five sessions and its third straight weekly gain. Most of that came late: 7,753.11 on Monday (-0.06%), 7,728.20 Tuesday (-0.32%), 7,748.50 Wednesday (+0.26%) on the July CPI print, then a record 7,798.99 close Thursday (+0.65%) before Friday gave back 0.17%.
The Russell 2000 rose 1.12% to a record 3,068.42, gaining in four of the five sessions. The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 0.56% to 53,732.41, the only major US index lower on the week, and the Nasdaq Composite added 0.14% to 26,729.16. The VIX fell 4.36% to 14.25.

July retail sales fell 0.6% at 8:30am ET against the 0.1% rise economists expected, with motor vehicle dealers down 1.8% and nonstore retailers down 2.2%. The University of Michigan preliminary August sentiment index followed at 10:00am ET at 51.0, down from 55.2 in July.
The Russell 2000 rose 0.51% to a record close while the three large-cap indices fell. Two of the week's momentum names kept running into the bell: STDN.US +10.09% and EROC.US +6.77% on Friday alone.
Macro themes that played out
July CPI, released Wednesday 12 August, rose 0.1% on the month and 3.4% over the year, down from 3.5% in June. Core CPI rose 0.2% on the month and 2.5% annually, from 2.6%. Shelter accounted for roughly two thirds of the monthly increase.
July PPI followed on Thursday 13 August, unchanged on the month and up 4.7% over the year. Final demand goods fell 0.7% while services rose 0.2%. The S&P 500 set its record close that afternoon.
The softer inflation pair moved rates 4 basis points. The US 10-year yield ended the week at 4.70% and the dollar index closed at 99.64, up 0.04%. Wednesday's FOMC minutes are the next scheduled read on the September meeting.
