US futures slip 0.28% as a Hormuz strike lifts crude 3.55% and energy becomes the only sector bid
S&P 500 futures traded at 7,700 at 8:39am ET on 31 August 2026, down 0.28%, after US forces struck two Iranian rocket launchers on Larak Island and sent WTI crude up 3.55% to $86.36. Energy was the only S&P sector higher before the open, with XLE.US +1.77% against XLU.US -1.31%, while gold fell 0.63% and high yield credit held at -0.06%. SAIC.US led the pre-market at +8.21% on a quarterly beat.
S&P 500 Falls 0.33% as Edison International Drops 23% on California Wildfire Bill
The S&P 500 closed at 7,686.14 on 31 August 2026, down 0.33%, with 9 of 11 sectors lower. A California wildfire bill that left investor-owned utilities fully liable took EIX.US down 23.07% and PCG.US down 20.06%, while utilities outside the state finished close to flat. Energy rose 2.04% on US strikes near the Strait of Hormuz and technology added 0.44%, together offsetting about 21 bps. August finished higher across all four major indexes.
