ASX morning brief, 9 September 2026: Dow falls 628 points as Amgen drops 10%, Brent near US$100

The Dow fell 628 points (-1.18%) to 52,786.07 on 8 September 2026 after AMGN.US dropped 10.08%, its worst session in almost 26 years, when Novartis reported that pelacarsen failed to cut cardiovascular events. NVS.US lost 13.93%. Semiconductors ran the other way, INTC.US +9.05% and AMD.US +5.90%, holding the Nasdaq to -0.32%. Brent settled at US$99.50, a six week high, and the US 10 year yield rose to 4.806%. The ASX 200 closed at a six week low of 8,920.8 (-1.00%) yesterday and SPI futures were about 0.2% higher at 7:00 AEST.
