ASX 200 close: 8,911.4 (-0.11%) Breadth: 95 advancers / 133 decliners (238 large caps swept) Sentiment: mixed

The S&P/ASX 200 closed at 8,911.4 on 9 September 2026, down 9.4 points or 0.11%, as a 1.73% gain in Energy and a 1.51% gain in Materials cancelled out a 1.02% fall in Financials and a 1.50% fall in Health Care. ASB.AU rose 7.13% to $4.66 after Austal confirmed a non-binding indicative offer of up to A$1.35bn for its US business from a Wildcat Infrastructure-led group, the second bidder for that asset. Brent crude sat at US$99.99, up 2.11%, after reports of explosions near Iran's Kharg Island and Houthi strikes on Saudi energy sites.
