The S&P/ASX 200 closed at 8,819.4 on 10 September 2026, down 92.0 points or 1.03%, with all 11 sectors lower after the US 10-year Treasury yield reached 4.84%, a three-year high, and Brent held above US$100 a barrel. St Barbara (SBM.AU) rose 16.44% to $0.850 on a binding agreement to sell its Simberi interest to Lingbao Gold Group. The Dow closed 0.77% lower and the Nasdaq 0.64% lower overnight, and the ASX 200 volatility index rose 11.84% to 13.14.
What moved the index
- Financials (-0.90%): about 31 bps of the 103 bps index fall, on a sector weight near 34%. CBA.AU fell 1.32% to $153.20, NAB.AU 1.44% and WBC.AU 1.57%. Fund managers and platforms fell harder as long yields rose: PNI.AU -5.69%, MFG.AU -4.73%, NWL.AU -3.21%, HUB.AU -2.66%.
- Materials (-1.63%): BHP.AU -1.77% to $63.44, RIO.AU -2.71%, FMG.AU -2.39% and MIN.AU -2.53% took roughly 29 bps out of the index on an 18% weight, with iron ore at US$98.80 a tonne, down 0.6%.
- Information Technology (-1.74%): the worst sector, worth about 7 bps at a 4% weight. XRO.AU -3.96% to $68.79, NXT.AU -3.83%, SDR.AU -2.46%, WTC.AU -1.62%.
- Industrials (-1.04%): ASB.AU -6.01% and BXB.AU -2.25% drove roughly 8 bps of the fall.
Together those four account for about 75 bps of the 103 bps index move. Health Care (-0.71%) added roughly 6 bps on CSL.AU -1.00%, RMD.AU -1.43% and ANN.AU -1.64%. The residual 22 bps came from the other six sectors, every one of which closed lower.
