S&P 500 Falls 0.52% as a Hyperscaler Capex Note Splits Chips From Software

S&P 500 close: 7,745.06 (-0.52%) Breadth: 9 of 11 sectors lower · Sentiment: bearish

The S&P 500 closed at 7,745.06 on 17 August 2026, down 40.70 points or 0.52%, after a Morgan Stanley note on hyperscaler AI capital spending made MSFT.US the session's largest drag at -3.04%. Memory suppliers took the same note the other way, and SNDK.US closed 8.88% higher with MU.US up 4.13% after Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick told the Wall Street Journal the administration opposes Apple sourcing Chinese memory chips. The 30-year Treasury yield settled at 5.31%, its highest since June 2007, and the index finished 0.18 points above its session low after opening at the day's high.

What moved the index

MSFT.US fell 3.04% to 480.35 on 17 August 2026, subtracting roughly 16 of the 52 basis points the S&P 500 gave up, the largest single-name contribution of the session.

  • Microsoft and the capex warning: MSFT.US -3.04%, worth about 16 bps. Morgan Stanley flagged that hyperscalers are committing large upfront cash to AI data center builds with payoffs years away. CRM.US -2.67% and ORCL.US -2.57% moved with it.
  • Communication services, the weakest sector: XLC.US -1.89%. META.US -3.54%, about 8 bps, ahead of Tuesday's opening arguments in Oakland, where 29 state attorneys general allege Facebook and Instagram were built to addict children. RDDT.US -7.63% and CHTR.US -6.59% deepened it.
  • The consumer and payment names: XLP.US -1.64%, XLY.US -1.23% and XLF.US -1.00% followed Goldman Sachs economist Jan Hatzius saying consumer spending slows as the tax refund boost fades. V.US -1.46%, MA.US -1.23% and BRK-B.US -1.15% cost about 4 bps between them.
  • Semiconductors and energy, the offset: SOXX.US +1.58% and XLE.US +1.08% were the only pockets of gain. MU.US +4.13% and SNDK.US +8.88% added back close to 10 bps, while XOM.US +0.85% and CVX.US +1.35% contributed about 2 bps as WTI settled 2.6% higher at $84.50, its best close since 31 July.

Those named drivers account for roughly 23 of the 52 basis point decline. The remainder came from breadth rather than any single name: 9 of the 11 sectors closed lower, and the median move across the 244 largest US listings was -0.54%.
