Sentiment: mixed S&P 500 futures: +0.05% · Nasdaq futures: +0.34% · Dow futures: -0.32%

The S&P 500 closed Friday at 7,785.76, down 0.17%, after July retail sales posted their steepest monthly drop in more than a year.
Overnight drivers
Storage and memory names account for the entire pre-market bid on 17 August 2026, with five of them up more than 1.8% while the six largest software decliners each fell more than 1.1%.
- SNDK.US +3.33% to 1,695.83, with SKHY.US +3.23%, MU.US +2.56%, WDC.US +2.20% and STX.US +1.86%. SanDisk's 13 August Investor Day set a non-GAAP gross margin target of up to 80% by fiscal 2030 and disclosed close to $94 billion in long-term contracts. - SNOW.US -2.04%, with SHOP.US -1.73%, NOW.US -1.33%, NET.US -1.32%, ORCL.US -1.31% and CRM.US -1.19%. Software is trading opposite hardware this morning. S&P 500 futures hold at +0.05% against a 0.34% gain in Nasdaq futures.
- BE.US +3.40% to 237.75 is the single largest pre-market gainer. Bloom Energy has tracked data centre power demand since CoreWeave reported $2.58 billion of quarterly revenue and a $104 billion backlog.
- VIX at 14.94, up 4.84% from Friday's 14.25 close even with S&P 500 futures flat. The dollar index sits at 99.46, down 0.20%, and Brent trades at US$88.95, up 0.49%, with the Strait of Hormuz standoff unresolved.

US economic calendar today (ET)
Two second-tier US releases land on Monday 17 August 2026, ahead of Wednesday's Fed minutes.
- 8:30am Empire State Manufacturing Index (August). Consensus 10.2, prior 15.6.
- 10:00am NAHB Housing Market Index (August). Consensus 35.0.
Rates and Fed pricing
The US 10-year Treasury yield settled Friday at 4.70%, up from 4.64% a week earlier, even after July inflation data landed in line.
Headline CPI rose 3.4% year over year in July with core at 2.5%, and producer prices were unchanged on the month. Yields firmed anyway. Three officials dissented in favour of a rate hike at the Fed's 28 to 29 July meeting, and Chair Kevin Warsh, who took over from Jerome Powell in May, described that discussion as a "good family fight". The next policy decision is 15 to 16 September.
