S&P 500 -0.48% as Brent tops US$100 and the 10-year hits 4.84%

S&P 500 close: 7,636.36 (-0.48%) Sector breadth: 1 of 11 SPDR sectors higher Sentiment: bearish

The S&P 500 closed at 7,636.36 on 9 September 2026, down 37.16 points or 0.48%, as Brent crude settled above US$100 for the first time since July and the US 10-year yield closed at 4.837% after touching 4.857%. Meta Platforms META.US rose 6.55% to $653.69 on the launch of Muse, its first paid consumer AI agent, and was the largest single positive contributor to the index. The Dow fell 0.77% and the Russell 2000 dropped 1.32%, so the selling ran deeper than the headline S&P number.

What moved the index

  • Consumer discretionary: XLY.US -1.34%, roughly 14 bps of the 48 bps index decline at an index weight near 10.5%. Caseys General Stores CASY.US fell 14.24% and Chewy CHWY.US 10.83%, both on free cash flow declines that offset earnings beats. Amazon AMZN.US closed -1.78%.
  • Industrials: XLI.US -1.51%, roughly 13 bps at a weight near 8.5%. AI data center infrastructure supplied four of the five worst names in the sleeve: Vertiv VRT.US -9.61%, X-Energy XE.US -9.87%, GE Vernova GEV.US -2.09%, Eaton ETN.US -1.64%.
  • Rates: the 10-year yield rose 3.1 bps to 4.837%, the 5-year closed 4.614% and the 30-year 5.286%, after Treasury said it would triple its longer-dated buyback operation to US$6 billion. Rate-sensitive sleeves followed: utilities XLU.US -1.17%, real estate XLRE.US -1.12%.
  • Offset: energy XLE.US +0.83% was the only sector higher, worth about 3 bps, and META.US alone added roughly 15 bps at a weight near 2.5%.

The ten declining sectors account for about 52 bps of drag against the 48 bps index move, with energy and Meta supplying the offset. Ten of eleven sectors closed lower, which puts the cause in crude and yields rather than in any one name.
