US pre-market, 9 September 2026: Brent tops US$100 and index futures point lower
Sentiment: bearish S&P 500 futures: -0.42%
S&P 500 futures trade at 7,648.25 at 8:36am ET, down 0.42%, after Brent crude broke US$100 a barrel for the first time since July on US strikes against five Iranian tankers. META.US is the largest pre-market gainer at +5.16% to $645.12, after Meta launched Muse, an autonomous AI agent sold on free, $20 and $100 monthly tiers. European equities are lower on the same crude move, with the STOXX 600 down 1.58% at 639.33 in mid-session, one day before an ECB decision that markets put at 99% for a 25 basis point hike to 2.50%.
Overnight drivers
- Crude: Brent +2.84% to US$100.70 and WTI +2.86% to US$95.69, a fourth straight advance after US forces destroyed five Iranian tankers that followed two missile attempts on a US Navy warship. Energy names lead the pre-market gainers: EQNR.US +2.65%, BP.US +1.74%, EOG.US +1.66%, TTE.US +1.59%, VLO.US +1.32%.
- Europe: STOXX 600 -1.58%, DAX -1.68% at 25,570.67, CAC 40 -1.95% at 8,155.69 and FTSE 100 -1.18% at 10,683.57 as of 8:36am ET. The ECB decides tomorrow with 25 basis points to 2.50% at 99% priced, and Christine Lagarde has named the oil rebound as an upside risk to euro-area inflation.
- Rates: US 10-year yield 4.81%. CME futures put roughly 60% odds on a 25 basis point Fed hike at the 16 September FOMC, up from a day earlier. VIX +4.90% to 16.49.
- Dollar and metals: DXY -0.14% to 98.65, EUR/USD +0.17% to 1.1650, gold unchanged at US$4,439.50/oz, copper -0.72%.
Overnight Asia and Europe
- Nikkei 225: 65,142.78 (-0.19%)
- Hang Seng: 25,274.96 (-0.17%)
- Kospi: 7,051.64 (+1.40%)
- S&P/ASX 200: 8,911.40 (-0.11%)
- STOXX 600: 639.33 (-1.58%, still trading)
Asia closed within 0.2% of flat in three of four markets, and only the Kospi's 1.40% gain sits outside that range. Europe is doing the selling. The CAC 40's 1.95% decline is the widest of the four majors, and the STOXX 600 has given back 10.27 points.
Tuesday's Wall Street close
- S&P 500: 7,673.52 (-0.58%)
- Nasdaq Composite: 26,421.41 (-0.32%)
- Dow: 52,786.07 (-1.18%, or 628.18 points)
- Russell 2000: 2,960.20 (-0.52%)
The Dow lost twice what the S&P 500 did in percentage terms. AMGN.US -10.08% on the Novartis Lp(a) trial miss, CRM.US -3.90% and HD.US -2.29% account for most of that gap in the price-weighted index. BKNG.US -6.72% and the airlines (UAL.US -2.82%, LUV.US -2.40%, DAL.US -1.51%) fell with crude, and all four are lower again pre-market.
Semiconductors held the Nasdaq's loss to 0.32%. INTC.US gained 9.05% to $104.47 on a Northland upgrade to Outperform with a $120 target and a DigiTimes report of a further 10% CPU price increase, with AMAT.US +3.98%, VRT.US +3.67% and ASML.US +2.91% alongside it. Three of those four trade lower this morning.
