The S&P 500 closed at 7,666.45 on 1 October 2026, up 0.19%, as the technology sector fund gained 1.05% on results from Accenture ACN.US and Synopsys SNPS.US, and the US 10-year yield fell back to 5.24% after touching 5.34% intraday. MAT.US rose 18.80% to $15.04 after reports that Authentic Brands Group has discussed an offer of more than $20 a share, or about $6 billion. The ISM manufacturing prices index jumped 6.8 points to 77.9 in September, even as the headline PMI eased to 54.5 against 55.0 expected.

- Technology: XLK.US +1.05%, worth about +35 bps at roughly a third of index weight. ACN.US +15.78%, SNPS.US +12.78% and CDNS.US +6.22% led, with NVDA.US +1.09% and MU.US +3.03% after Micron's fiscal fourth-quarter beat. AAPL.US -0.81% and AVGO.US -2.15% offset part of the gain.
- Energy and industrials: XLE.US +1.95% and XLI.US +0.99%, worth about +14 bps combined. Refiners MPC.US (+6.25%), VLO.US (+5.38%) and PSX.US (+3.49%) rose with WTI crude, up 2.75% to $92.91, after Reuters reported Chinese refiners suspended October fuel exports.
- Health care: XLV.US -1.32%, worth about -12 bps. ALNY.US fell 6.31%, RGEN.US 7.80% and INSM.US 4.86%.
- Communication services: XLC.US -0.93%, worth about -9 bps. GOOGL.US lost 1.70%, NFLX.US 2.49% and PSKY.US 9.58%.
Together these four groups net to about +28 bps against the 19 bps gain. Staples (XLP.US -0.33%), real estate (XLRE.US -0.56%) and materials (XLB.US -0.33%) took off roughly 3 bps more; the remaining 6 bps gap is within the error of the approximate sector weights.

NKE.US reported fiscal first-quarter 2027 revenue of $11.2 billion after the 1 October close, down 4% and below the roughly $11.32 billion consensus, with diluted EPS of $0.48 against $0.44 expected. Nike guided fiscal 2027 revenue to fall by a high-single-digit percentage and adjusted EPS to $1.15 to $1.35, against analyst estimates near $1.65. Shares fell about 5.8% after the bell, according to post-market reports, from a regular-session close of $35.15 (-0.71%), its lowest close since 2014. Gross margin rose 60 bps to 42.8%.
