The S&P/ASX 200 closed at 8,791.3 on 20 July 2026, down 5.4 points or 0.06%, as gains in energy and base metals cancelled a technology slide that tracked the Nasdaq Composite's 1.40% fall on Friday. EQ Resources EQR.AU rose 34.09% to $0.295 after Andrew Forrest bought Oaktree Capital's 16.8% stake, about 862.1 million shares worth roughly $190 million at Friday's close. Brent held US$88.72 and copper added 0.98%, keeping miners and energy producers bid while AUD/USD pushed through 70 US cents to 0.7003.

- Technology: down 2.49% on average across 12 large-cap names, costing the index about 8 bps. WTC.AU fell 3.55%, XRO.AU 2.08% and PXA.AU 4.94% after the Nasdaq Composite dropped 1.40% on Friday.
- Energy and coal: worth about +8 bps. STO.AU rose 2.08% and WDS.AU 1.44% with Brent at US$88.72, while YAL.AU gained 5.97%, SMR.AU 3.35% and NHC.AU 2.87%.
- Banks: about -6 bps. CBA.AU fell 0.34%, NAB.AU 0.40% and MQG.AU 0.82%, outweighing WBC.AU +0.27% and ANZ.AU +0.19%.
- South32 S32.AU: up 4.62% to $4.080, worth about +3 bps on its own, after June-quarter output beat FY26 guidance and the company agreed to sell its aluminium business to Alcoa.
Together with iron ore majors (-4 bps), healthcare (-4 bps) and lithium (-4 bps), these drivers net to roughly -15 bps. The residual of about +8 bps came from small gains spread across the rest of the market, consistent with 103 advancers against 100 decliners.
